    Fascinating. It seems to be mainly those in some sort of Reformed tradition who have such large libraries. Many pastors don't have a lot of interest in theology, and many could never afford to purchase so many books. It's very unusual also to be able to read so many languages! An impressive collection of Puritan writers, too. Surprised to hear N T Wright described as 'liberal' and as an 'enemy' when his writing would likely be characterized as 'conservative' by many in the theological world.

    Thank you so much for this video. I've started learning ancient greek from zero two month ago and wondered which pronounciation methods I should use in my future studies. After trying out both, I must say that I find it slightly easier to remember vocab with the erasmian pronounciation. I also think when I move on to modern greek in a counple of years, knowing the erasmian pronounciation also helps understanding why certain words are spelled the way they are. I mean it would render some letters completely useless if there wasn't a phonetical distinction between eg η and ι in the past.

    I’ve read ESV & NKJV cover to cover and most of an LSB. Also the NT in an NLT. Nothing compares to my KJV. The LSB isn’t bad, but I still have to have my KJV side by side to compare text. These modern versions seem to dilute references to Christ’s Deity in many places. Pretty sad to be honest. They are translated from corrupt manuscripts IMO

    The best tip for reading the kjv is to either immerse yourself in 400 year old English and make it your native language, or else read a modern English translation like the nkjv.

    • @warnerchandler9826
      @warnerchandler9826 7 дней назад

      I'm sorry, my good man, but your point about 400 year old English is just wrong. The King James Bible English has been *in common use* by English speakers for over 400 years.

      @RM47319 7 дней назад

      @@warnerchandler9826 Tellest thou me truly. Spake I also thusly aforetimes and unto alway. People still read koine Greek too, but it's still 2000 years old and nobody's native language.

    • @warnerchandler9826
      @warnerchandler9826 5 дней назад

      @@RM47319 My point which you spectacularly ignored is KJB English has been in daily use by millions of believers for the last 400 years. That makes it *current* not 400 years out of date.

    • @RM47319
      @RM47319 5 дней назад

      @warnerchandler9826 Those millions of people consistently misunderstand the kjv daily, and the fact that they are told to download lists of dead and archaic words and keep a dictionary handy while reading proves your point false. At best it's a dead language that lots of people daily struggle through. If it were current, people would speak and hear it conversationally and be immersed in it. It's not by any stretch "current". The bottom line is, regardless of how many people read it every day, it's still largely a foreign language that nobody speaks natively anymore, and hasn't for literally centuries. If you would like to prove me wrong, then I challenge you to continue this conversation exclusively in KJV english. Are you game?

    • @warnerchandler9826
      @warnerchandler9826 4 дня назад

      @@RM47319 I have already proven you wrong. If this is a game to you -- it is -- it is not a game to me or pretty much any of the other millions that read and live by the King James Bible and have since 1611 through 2024 and for the foreseeable future.

    You should use Anki for vocab, and get the entire vocab for a book memorized before even tackling it. That way your only focus is getting the syntax down. If you sit down and get focused for like an hour and a half or so, you can grind out 50 new words. You may not remember all of them the following day, but your retention will still be solid.

    Dane, Reformed Baptist here, hailing from Minnesota. This video is excellent. I've had my nose in the Puritans for about 15 years. I think most anything by Watson, Brooks, Boston, and Sibbs are very accessible and good to start with. Personally, my absolute favorite is Owen. I know he's not the easiest to read, but I think nearly everything in the first 7 volumes of his works is some of the most glorious things that pen has but to paper. I think his best work is The Person of Christ. I have read it multiple times and will return to it many more times.

    Nothing but KJV for the first thirty years... got my first one from my earthly father in 1971... William Collins, Sons 1959 Edition ... bright Red Letter Edition... Iona clear type... it needs recovering... if one just uses the inter-column references it becomes clear. Got an NKJV at the 30 year mark. Like reading 8th grade American English! I now use the ESV and a CSB ... it is all good.

    I disagree that it's pedagogy at the root of not being able to "read" the ancient Greek after a few years of study. I mean you would have the same with REAL texts with the natural method. Yes, I have a PhD in classical languages, was taught in the traditional method, have been doing Greek for twenty five years, and have been doing spoken ancient Greek for the past two years. I also can speak and read modern languages, such as Japanese, and it just takes time. I still struggle with reading texts despite all this, and I have taught it for decades. Students struggle with Greek (and Japanese). They are harder. I wonder how many classes of "normal" undergraduates he's taught. He mentions he "doesn't believe" that the language is any more challenging than other languages. He's also looking at the BEST students of the language when he talks about those chats. I have friends who have studied both language as living ones for years, and they still struggle with challenging prose texts. And, I can read koine NT Greek pretty easily with the old grammar method decades ago.

    This video is spot on. The argument that "Ancient Greek is just too complicated" is absurd. It's just a language like any other. Not only that, it was the lingua franca of the Roman Empire. Tons of normal people learned it, including stupid people. Most learned it as their second language, many learned it as their 3rd or 4th language. Most of these people couldn't even read, much less study grammar rules. Same goes for Latin. You're absolutely right that the problem is pedagogy. The reason people struggle with the typical methods is because those methods don't work.

    If modern greek is your mother tongue or if you achieve a mother tongue level of modern greek, then you might get at least some elementary fluency in ancient greek if you study a lot of ancient greek and have fluency as your target. Possibly not the only way of achieving this but definitely one that is checked. The most interesting thing is that after studying ancient greek for some years the phrases that indicate the onset of fluency emerge naturaly i.e. instead of saying something in modern greek you just find yourself quite amused to having said that in ancient greek.

    I'm from Brasil, and of course English is my second language. In here the Trinitarian Bible Society is responsible for the Almeida Corrigida Fiel, which is on the same field of the KJV, only in portuguese. Revising my collection of books and bibles to put in a new shelf i got as a gift it gave me joy to find a KJV gifted to my father in 89. I'm restoring it now (the cover was a mess because of the time) and I'm very glad, because it would be very expensive to buy one from Amazon BR. I kind of stutter a litlle in reading it, but nothing major. Thanks for the tips! It will be of great help once the restoration is done! Peace to all of you!
